Autodiscover and SRV Records for Office 365

In this article I’m going to go through the steps to create an SRV record for the use of Microsoft Exchange’s Autodiscover service.

Since the recent introduction of SRV Records to our platform, it is now possible to create your SRV Records to link with Autodiscover services.

Things to think about

In order to utilise this, you will need a domain which is hosted within our web hosting platform, using our DNS servers.

Other things to think about:

You will require a certificate for your Exchange server which has Uniform Communications functionality. These are available from our website. You’ll need the “UC/SAN” Certificate.

You will also require a valid A record pointing to your server’s IP address, to which the certificate is also registered on. For my example purposes we will use mail.domain.tld as our target server.

How do I create the SRV Record?

    1. First thing you’ll need to do is log into your control panel account

    1. Once logged in you’ll need to find the DNS Configuration page which is located at Domains Info > Domain Settings > Select the Domain > “Edit” next to DNS Configuration

    1. Scroll to the bottom where you will find “Add SRV Record”

  1. On the next screen you will be presented with the fields required to be filled in I’ll explain this below in more detail.

Here is what you’ll be presented with:

In the name field we have “_autodiscover._tcp.mail”

_autodiscover is the service which the record is for – ._tcp is the protocol the service is listening on and .name is for the sub-domain that your mail server runs on. Most cases it’s mail.domain.tld

Weight/Priority: This isn’t needed in most cases, usually only if you have multiple records of the same service.**

Port: 443 – This is the default port for the autodiscover service. Please check your service configuration before entering this information.**

Data: This is the target server address, where the service is hosted. This must be a valid A record address and will not accept a direct IP address. You won’t need a dot (“.”) on the end of the address as our control panel system will do it for you.

Once you’ve filled in the form, click on “Submit” this will create your SRV Record and outlook will now be able to communicate easily with the Autodiscover service.

If you have any questions or comments relating to Autodiscover or SRV Records, please use the comments section below (if not domain/account specific in which case contact support team through normal methods).

**Please note that the combined length of Priority, Weight and Port can not exceed 6 Characters long
